Dry pet food, wet food multipacks and treats cycle through half price steadily. Dry food carries the biggest absolute saving because the bags are expensive, and it stores well as long as it is kept sealed and dry.

Buy the size your pet actually eats through in a couple of months. Dry food does go stale once opened — the fats oxidise, and fussy animals notice before you do. Wet food in cans and pouches keeps far longer and is the safer thing to buy in bulk. If you are switching brands to chase a discount, change over gradually rather than all at once.
